Central African Republic ::

The Tibesti Mountains in northern Chad a very hot desert area aren’t easy to get to. They have a reputation for being both beautiful and perilous and landmines and rebel groups leftover from recent strife make the place even more difficult to get to. Populated by the ancient Toubou tribe (reportedly aggressive and dangerous people) the region also has some active volcanoes. Fly to Faya-Largeau then arrange to join a camel caravan or make prior arrangements (through a travel agent) to get a four-wheel-drive vehicle (you can’t just rent them when you get there). In these harsh mountains ancient cave drawings of hunting scenes date back to 5 000 BC. We do not recommend going to Tibesti at this time. It is simply too dangerous. 500 mi/800 km north of N’Djamena.

It seems to be possible to cross from Libya to Zouar in the Tibesti. You should be prepared to pay a lot of pour-boires along the way, since this area is off limits if you don't have a permit from N'djamena, which is not likely if you are coming from Libya.
